Full Suspension Mountain Bikes
Full suspension mountain bikes account for up to 70% of all mountain bike sales. This is because they are far more enjoyable to ride, more comfortable over long periods of time and they enhance the riding experience. From the initial full suspension (soft tail) bikes the technology has improved dramatically. No longer are they like riding a 'poco stick', where every pedal stroke forward seemed to be soaked up in the suspension, the now have made huge technological advancements in frame and geometry design making them far more efficient and affordable. A new soft tail mountain bike is a very sensible decision for all mountain biking.
Bike manufacturers now have offer full suspension for all biking categories. These categories are broken down into riding styles as follows and are easily differentiated by the amount of travel the suspension offers.
- X-Country - up to 100mm of travel
- Trail - up to 150mm of travel
- All Mountain - up to 170mm of travel
- Free-ride - up to 225mm of travel
- Downhill - up to 200mm of travel
Hard Tail Mountain Bikes
Hard tail mountain bikes in the last half-decade really breaks into 3 categories.
X-Country - Super light weight race bikes, stiff, fast but you have to be a strong athlete to handle a long endurance race riding one. Thus, sales have diminished to soft tail x-country.
Jump Bikes / Urban Riding - Aggressive off road and street riding, great for tricks, technical jumping and less to break for those who are hard on gear. Good for critiquing your free-ride riding style.
Entry Level - This category ranges from $599 - $1800 RRP for a good starting point for a novice rider. Ideal for transportation purposes around Wanaka and its trails. |
